Iron Man Movie Announced at Comic Con

Iron Man and Comic-Con go hand-in-gauntlet, the success of the first film so inextricably tied to its ecstatic reception here almost a year before its release. Sales of iron man dvds are still rising.

History would appear to be repeating itself, as preview scenes from the forthcoming sequel (scheduled for May 2010) were greeted by more than 6,000 attending fans with thunderous applause.

The follow-up film picks up where the first left off and billionaire industrialist Tony Stark’s startling admission of his super-secret identity. No one was saying anything, but there was definitely the impression that the revelation is not without consequences.

I therefore couldn’t help but ask actor Robert Downey Jr. if his own experience with the downside of celebrity in any way informed his portrayal of Stark’s.

“Let me put it this way,” he allowed. “After Iron Man 1 came out, all the repressed narcissistic personality disorder proclivities I may have had came out to say `Hi! Wooo! Look at me!’ And I quickly threw a 300,000-square-foot butterfly net on it. But it’s tricky.

“There is a kind of catharsis, which fortunately works in service of the story. Tony’s the kind of guy who would have a (giant) poster of himself as Iron Man pinned to the wall. I have an Iron Man head at home, but it’s not as if you walk in and it’s like, `Welcome to Iron Man’s house’ or whatever. Most of that stuff’s downstairs.

“But it’s not beyond me to go there, not because I’m so attached to it in terms of my identity, but just because it’s so cool.”
