Ever get the feeling someone is lying to you? How do you figure it out? A lot of people try to figure out what their poker opponents have by guessing that they have their own hand. So, if they are on a flush draw, they might ask their opponent if he is on a flush draw, to gauge the response. Sometimes after a hand is over, people still lie about their hand, with the ultimate slip up being the claim of having a card that someone else folded.
This can be to throw your opponents off in later hands, or to conceal a very lucky bluff that you got away with at the casino.
On high stakes poker, Dario Minieri was in a hand with David Peat. It was a limped pot to Minieri’s big blind and he checked. Minieri – 9h 5h Peat – Qs 9s Flop – Qh 3h 9x Peat has top two pair and Minieri has middle pair and a flush draw. Minieri led for 2600, Peat raised to 9k, and Minieri re-raised to 23,500. Peat shoved. Dario folded.
When the hand was over, Minieri asked if Peat had a set of nines, and Peat said no. Then he asked Q, 9? Peat replied something to the degree of, how about J, 10 hearts? He was essentially propagating a lie, but then Minieri went a step further and said, you couldn’t have had the 10 of hearts, I did (which was another lie!). He lied to try and catch Peat in a lie.
