Windsor Castle Colourful History:
The construction of Windsor can be found lying in the early seventh century Saxon settlement of Windlesora, where the existing day parish of Old Windsor can be found. The settlement of Windsor is accurately branded as the “New Windsor” – the phrase “new” being referenced in a relative way!
Windsor Castle at the start was erected by the notorious William the Conqueror, due to his attack of England in ten sixty-six. The original structure was built from wood with earth defences. Windsor Castle held a noticeable strategic location on a steep hill high above the River Thames, and was a division of a number of of fortresses in the region the Capital, with the Tower of London, one whole days journey away, at its centre.
The Castle was then later remade in rock, and rose in significance over the years. More recently Henry the 2nd created the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. After the English Civil War, the Castle’s major role became that of a royal palace. The Castle has remained almost totally unaffected from the start of the nineteenth century, apart from the reconstruction job right after the latest fire in 1992.
